Studenci i Święta Wielkanocne/ Students and Easter

Projekt Try

Try Project

Poland is a country with numerous traditions, especially when it comes to holidays. As Polish citizens are mostly of the Catholic faith, this religion’s practices had a lot of influence on the customs in Poland throughout the years. One of the most important holidays in Poland (or even the most important) is Easter. To help uphold the Easter traditions of the region, every Palm Sunday, Opole Silesia Museum in Bierkowice organises the Easter Fair. This open-air event is an opportunity for the traditional folk groups, artisans, and storytellers to present their craftsmanship.

Last year, University of Opole together with the Contemporary Art Gallery created the “Golden Eggs Project”, under which our University international students learned about Polish Spring and Easter traditions, in particular, how to decorate the Easter eggs, creating golden Easter Eggs.

This year we continued our cooperation with the Gallery. Our International students from Sociology department attended the Easter Fair in Bierkowice, under the same project that this time was called “Try”. The name of the project is not accidental. The project has been created to encourage people to open up to new cultures and traditions, to try another cuisines, and interact with people from different parts of the world. For this occasion, students from the Art Projects in Public Spaces prepared the traditional foods, specific to their countries – dishes from Turkey, Cambodia, Iran, Greece, Ukraine and Spain. Our students’ stand was very popular and the food disappeared fast. As the final part of the event, just like last year, our students participated in the most popular Easter tradition, colouring hard boiled eggs, creating ‘pisanki’.
